Performing the dance of the rolls, c. 1929

Charlie, out of costume, performs the roll dance from The Gold Rush.  The scene was filmed in eleven takes with Abe Lyman and a trio of players performing off-camera.

  1. Jess you were holding out:) Great close up, are you saying that when he was doing the roll dance in the film Aby Lyman was in the background playing something...probably makes sense so that he could keep his timing.

  2. Yes, the musicians were playing off camera, this helped to ensure that each take was the same length. I'm sure the music helped with his timing as well. This wasn't unusual, Charlie often had musicians playing in the background while he made his films.
