Charlie in the 1940 census

Here's what the newly released 1940 census tells us about Charlie:

• He lived at 1085 Summit Drive (formerly Cove Way).
• He was born in England and was 51 years old.
• Paulette Goddard ("Paulette Chaplin") is listed as his wife.
• Charlie claims to rent his home (the "R" in the third box on the left) even though he had it built in 1922. However Charlie once told Lita Grey that he had his house put out of his name to protect himself against women.
• Two Japanese servants lived in the home including George, who was Charlie's cook for many years. 
• Paulette's age is incorrectly listed as 27. According to her birth certificate, she was born in 1910 which means she would have been closer to 30.  Paulette, like many women in Hollywood, sometimes fibbed about her age.
• Charlie's neighbors on Summit Drive in 1940 included Mary Pickford and her husband Buddy Rogers (1143), Fred Astaire (1121), & Ronald Coleman (1003).
