This is NOT a Charlie Chaplin quote. While Charlie may have appreciated the sentiment, I cannot find a time or place where he actually said it. According to the site, Quote Investigator, the saying has been attributed to everyone from Steve Martin to Groucho Marx to Chaplin, but the idea was expressed more than two centuries ago.
