Chaplin toyed with the idea of dialogue for
Modern Times. He and Paulette made sound tests and actually shot some scenes with dialogue, but he eventually abandoned the idea and kept the film essentially silent, although the Tramp is given a voice toward the end of the film when he sings a song in
gibberish.
