I just re-watched The Pilgrim on TCM last weekend! Still laughed at the same stuff, too. The whole church bit with the David and Goliath Sermon and the many, many bows he took was still hysterical.
THE PILGRIM has always been a favorite of mine. I also love the scene when he takes the collection boxes and gives a thankful look to one side of the room and an accusatory look at the other side who apparently didn’t give as much. Of course, the scenes with the little brat (Dinky Dean Riesner) are just classic.
There's sort of a gambling scene when Chuck Riesner steals the money towards the end and heads to the saloon and the gambling table (another favorite scene is when Charlie transforms himself right in front of the camera before heading into the saloon to get the money back). The above photo was part of a series of posed publicity shots that were taken for the film by James Abbe.

Deleteoh yes, how could I forget that scene with that kid?! Perfection.
ReplyDeleteHey, I just read the caption under the photo - I guess Chaplin cut the "gambling hall scene" referred to here.
