Charlie & Paulette in Hawaii, 1936

There was a discussion last week about photos of Charlie and Paulette in Hawaii. Unfortunately most of the photos only show them en route or arriving in the islands; there are few that show them out and about. I would love to find some others. Numerous photos also exist of the couple aboard the SS President Coolidge. But since they sailed on this boat for most, if not all, of their 4-month trip to the Far East, it is hard to know for sure which photos were taken en route to Hawaii or after. I only posted photos here that I knew were Hawaii-related.

This was not Charlie's first time in Hawaii. He and Edna Purviance spent a month there in 1917 after the filming of The Adventurer.

  1. I'm not quite grasping the concept of bringing your "mother in-law" along on a really long vacation trip. Did I read somewhere that CC got along great with Paulette's mother?

    1. Charlie and Paulette supposedly got married on this trip, so perhaps that's why she came along. However, as we all know, there is no evidence of a marriage (or a divorce, for that matter). It's possible she accompanied them as more of a chaperone, since it was frowned upon for unmarried couples to travel together in those days. Charlie did get along with Alta. According to the Julie Gilbert bio, he once told Paulette that he found her mother so attractive he wanted to take her to bed.

    2. That's just wrong. WRONG. WRONG!! File under, things never to say to your girlfriend.

    3. I agree! However I should mention that this information is passed along second-hand in the book. A friend of Paulette's said that she told him this--so, who knows if it's true, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was. I don't think Paulette cared. She was an unabashed flirt and openly flirted with Chaplin's friends.
