Charlie & Mabel Normand in MABEL'S STRANGE PREDICAMENT, released Feb. 9th, 1914
This was the first film in which Chaplin acted in his Tramp costume (it was filmed before Kid Auto Races At Venice, but released later.) The film also features Chaplin's first appearance with his first leading lady, Mabel Normand.

I've grown to really appreciate and respect Mabel Normand. She was a contemporary of Mary Pickford and quite talented. Chaplin initially had issues with Normand, but also came to value her skills.
ReplyDeleteI saw a 1992 Chaplin documentary on youtube last night. It was narrated by Burgess Meredith. It covered a bit of Mack Sennett, Essanay, and Mutual and First National. I could not beloved that Sennett productions did not even include the stars names like Chaplin or Normand on the lead in headers. The Keystone films were sold by the measurement of 'foot'......like you'd buy a yard of cloth. No wonder Charlie rebelled.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, Mabel was adored by her fan base ....and Charlie noticed that it was the Personality of a character that would always be the driving force in any production. It always had been.
