I have always loved that second shot of them - and have always wondered...just how red was that lipstick she has on? That is some DARK lipstick in black and white!
I wonder if they were still a true couple there. I know they remained friends and Paulette got a Mexican Divorce in early June 1942. It seems to me I read here a comment under a 1939 photo of Paulette taking the boys to visit CC at a retreat where one said said the relationship was already over by then.
You're thinking of the time Paulette brought the boys to see Charlie when he left and went to Pebble Beach alone for several months. That was in 1938. According to Chaplin, by the time they made The Great Dictator, which began production the next year, their relationship was faltering. Although it's clear that they remained friends.
The night I met Chaplin at Lincoln Center on April 4th 1972, Paulette showed up and wowed the crowd in a red sequined dress. She sat on Charlie's lap to the delight of everyone except for Oona! I've got a photo of that night meeting him which I wish I knew how to post here. Ran into Paulette at Bun & Burger on 55th and Sixth in Manhattan and had breakfast with her a few months later. A delightful, candid woman. Spats White...... www.spatswhite.com
Wow, you met Charlie and Paulette?! What a wonderful memory to have! I'd love to hear more about it.
There's no way for anyone but me to post photos here but if you'd like to send it to me, I'd be happy to share it (my email address is at the top of the page under "Questions/Comments").
A while back I posted a photo of Charlie & Paulette's meeting here:

ReplyDeleteMaybe it's "jungle red" (the nail polish color in "The Women")
DeleteOMG - you are the best! I can't believe I didn't think of that as a response.
ReplyDeleteI thought you'd like that
