    1. He makes a similar statement in "My Autobiography." I wouldn't be surprised if he often felt that way at parties.

  2. This entire article in Life, in the pages before this excerpt, shows how Chaplin really needed to come back to the US to have closure. There were those in Hollywood that spoke up for him when he was at a low point in 52, but he needed this goodbye with those who loved him. He was afraid to come back to his one time home, but it was a fitting tribute.
