I will never get over the photos of Charlie directing. I actually love seeing Charlie working behind the screen because its nice to see some of that genius at work....and there is just so little footage we have of Charlie actually directing.
ReplyDeleteSo interesting to see this picture was actually published! We found a post card version in Rollie's brother Dan's things. I had never seen it anywhere else before coming across it here. As far as we know it is the first picture of Rollie and Charlie together, at least I don't think I've seen an earlier one. btw, the other cameraman is Wm. Foster who went on to work at Fox (per Rollie to work on dramas with Bill Farnum) soon after The Count.

DeleteI was happy to find this photo because I had only ever seen a cropped version of it. It's interesting that it might be the first photo of Charlie and Rollie together. The above photos are from PICTURE-PLAY magazine (December 1916) & accompany an article by Mabel Condon called "In Chaplin's House Of Glass" (the article can be found on the archive.org site). The only other photo that came to mind is this one from THE FLOORWALKER, unfortunately the cameraman's face is cutoff. Perhaps there's an uncropped version of it out there somewhere.

Guilty as charged. And also guilty of being imprecise re. "first picture". This one is the first of Rollie clearly as cameraman w/ Chaplin, however the first pic of the two of them together ever, I think, as you point out, is that fairly common one from The Floorwalker, with Rollie holding a slate (84). I don't remember seeing any photos of the two of them together from Essanay times.

DeleteThe photo I referred to in my last comment wasn't the slate-holding photo/still from UNKNOWN CHAPLIN. I figured you were familiar with those shots. It was a published photo but unfortunately, Rollie's face (if it is him) is cut off. You can see it in the link I provided.
I can't recall seeing any photos of them from Essanay times either. That would be quite a find!
