Great post by John Bengston about the filming locations of Chaplin's 1921 masterpiece, a number of which still exist.

Read more about Chaplin's film settings in Bengston's Silent Traces. I've spent hours staring at the photos in this book.
I actually went and visited some of the sites! The window with the grating for a scene with City Lights is still, as of 3 years ago, on the building that he filmed in front of. The alley for the Kid car chase was still there, too! I did the same with the Buster Keaton Silent Traces book!
ReplyDeleteIf I ever make it to L.A. I'll have to allot several days just for visiting film locations.
DeleteI know the people who bought the Muhammad Ali home and have been there a few times in the last few years. Not only is the exterior of the place much the same as it was when CC filmed there nearly 97 years ago, but the entry door hardware is still the same!

That's really something. When you look at the then and now photos you can see that little has changed. You would only 20 years had gone by, not almost 100.
