THE ADVENTURER (1917)

This was Chaplin’s last film for the Mutual Corporation. The beach scenes were filmed near the mouth of Topanga Canyon.

During the filming, it was reported in the press that Charlie dived into the rough seas to save a 7-year-old girl from drowning. The girl had been swept off a rock while watching Charlie & his company work.

    So, was Charlie a strong swimmer? Did he learn as an adult in the U.S.? I don't imagine he had the luxury to swim in his childhood.

    He was an excellent swimmer. I'm not sure where he learned to swim, but in "My Trip Abroad" Charlie recalled going to Kennington Baths to swim as a child (he said it was "the reason for many a day's hookey"). He enjoyed swimming well into his 70s. Eric James remembered that Charlie kept his pool in Vevey heated because he liked to swim one lap up and back first thing every morning.
