I remember a few years ago, looking up whatever happened to Pickford's 2 adopted children from the 1940's with Buddy Rogers - It appeared to a sad case of the children not living up to Mary's ideal and slowing being eased out of her life. I wonder why she didn't have any with Fairbanks? The books I've read detail their marriage as just very busy and dedicated to their image and their careers.
I wonder why she chose to adopt children so late in life? It sounds like she wasn't much of a mother. Neither was her sister, Lottie, from what I've read. Gwynne ended up being raised by Mary's mother. Re: Mary not having children with Doug. It's probably a good thing they didn't. I've wondered the same thing with Charlie and Paulette. Every woman he was with for any period of time got pregnant. I wonder if she either couldn't get pregnant or had abortions. I know she had a miscarriage with Burgess Meredith.
I think she was smart enough to take her own precautions (birth control WAS available then, contrary to popular belief). She was a career minded girl, and probably had no intention of derailing that train. She had a terrible experience with Meredith, an ectopic pregnancy that resulted in a 5 months miscarriage - Meredith wrote about in in his autobiography as a terrible experience that resulted in a depression for her, and it was the only time he ever saw her down. It was apparently a boy.
Birth control was available but Charlie was not always open to it--even for women. Evidently he wouldn't allow Joan Barry to use a diaphragm, so she got pregnant twice! Charlie...you just want to hit him sometimes.
I didn't know about Paulette's baby being a boy. How sad.
